Writing in English for non-native writers

Writing in English for non-native writers

The European Association for Technical Communication (tekom Europe e.V.) published the Rule-Based Writing – English for Non-Native Writers guide in 2014. It offers a series of useful rules for non-native writers that have to write technical texts in English. The manual is written in English and compiles the most important terms, concepts and rules of standardisation for technical writing in English.

The guide provides practical advice on different areas:

  • Titles, index entries, cross references, glossaries
  • Phrases, punctuation, verb tenses, syntax
  • Use of prepositions, articles, abbreviations and acronyms

All rules, examples and practical suggestions that make up the guide focus on two fundamental objectives for all technical documentation: to be able to take maximum advantage of the information for different types of documentation and to be able to translate this information quickly and at low cost into other languages.
