Certified language services: ISO 9001 and ISO 17100
How do I know you are providing me with quality translations?
When looking for a language service provider, you will have undoubtedly asked the same question.
Endless statements are made to try to inspire confidence by promising a faithful translation of the original text and offering more than just a simple translation, but all these cases limit the assessment of the complex service of translation to linguistic quality.
So what do we recommend? You should choose a provider that guarantees the overall quality of the service (approved professionals, work processes, meeting delivery deadlines and requirements, customer service, etc.) and a provider that supports you throughout your company's entire internationalisation process.
Standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 17100 define "quality" for language services, how it can be measured and what has to be done to attain it.
STAR Servicios Lingüísticos has held both certifications since 2007. Year after year, we have passed the quality audits that confirm our commitment to guaranteeing customer satisfaction.
ISO 9001, the standard for quality management systems
The ISO 9000 family of quality standards established by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) applies to any type of organisation (manufacturing companies, service providers, public administrations, etc.). The main standard in this family – ISO 9001 – describes the requirements of a quality management system. In this regard, the main advantages of certified companies such as STAR are:
- Fewer issues in production or provision of services
- Increased productivity
- Greater focus on customer requirements
- Continuous improvement
ISO 17100, the standard for translation services
The new version of the standard, which defines the best practices for quality translation services, was published on 1 May 2015. It replaces the former European standard for translation services, the UNE-EN 15038.
Two elements of the standard merit close attention: firstly, the management of providers (selection, approval, training and continual assessment); secondly, the process of creating the service, an essential and compulsory part of which is that the translations are reviewed by a second translator, linguist or expert in the subject matter.
