Customizing the dictionary window with Views
TermStar NXT provides several settings for displaying your dictionary. The Views tab allows you to manage the way you wish to see your dictionary. When you initially select a user role, TermStar NXT provides you with the relevant default view. You can also switch between views or modify views and thus see your dictionary in the way you prefer. In this post, we will explain the views in detail, how to switch between different views as well as how to modify them.
In order to explain the different views, we first need to understand what a layout is. A dictionary view consists of a combination of three layouts. Each of these determines the appearance of one of the three areas of the dictionary window:
- Main layout (left page): this defines the appearance of the left-hand side of each dictionary.
- Additional layout (right page): this defines the appearance of the right-hand side of each dictionary. If you have terminology displayed on the left-hand side, you can use this side to display detailed information about the selected term. If you do not select a right-hand page layout, TermStar NXT will use the left-hand page layout on the right as well.
- Edit mode layout: this defines how the dictionary appears in edit mode and thereby specifies the fields in which you can enter or edit information.
You can access layouts from View > Dictionary layouts as seen in the image below:
Switching between dictionary views
You can choose from the default views for the dictionary window and from the views that you have created yourself.
It is very easy to switch between views. TermStar NXT provides a variety of views you can choose from in order to suit your requirements. If you are a linguist, you can choose the view provided for this purpose from the drop-down menu, as seen in the image below:
As shown above, in selecting the Linguist view, the information that is of interest to the linguist is displayed.
You can change existing views (including the default views) by combining layouts and saving them under their current name or as a new, user-defined view. User-defined views can be deleted, but default views cannot be deleted.
Modifying a view is very easy and can be done as follows:
Step 1: Open a dictionary and select View. In the centre of the Dictionary layouts ribbon bar, TermStar NXT displays three drop-down lists, as shown below.
Step 2: Create your required view by selecting a layout from each field. The view of your dictionary is updated every time you select a new layout:
In the above image, as we have selected NXT_Linguist_l layout on the left, information relevant to a linguist is shown. NXT_AllFields_l layout on the right displays all the fields of the selected term for which information has been entered by the terminologist. In this case, only the source and target terms are displayed as they are the only two specified, no information regarding subject, etc. is specified. NXT_AllFields_e specifies that all fields of the selected term can be edited when the user double clicks on the term.
Step 3: Choose the name under which you wish to save the new view. Select Save from View > Manage views to save the modified view with the same name (as the default name). If you wish to retain the default view, you can choose another name for the view you just created by selecting layouts as described in Step 2. To do so, select Save as instead of Save as shown in the image below:
Note: as you select the required layouts, the display changes, but the TermStar view drop-down in View > Manage views still displays the name of the view that was last selected or saved, even though the dictionary view has changed as you have performed the previous steps. If you save a view under its default name and later wish to return to the default view provided by TermStar NXT, select View > Manage views > Reset as shown in the above image.
Step 4: If you wish to delete a view, select Delete from View > Manage Views. A message will be displayed before you actually delete the view just in case you have clicked on the Delete button by mistake.
That's all on layouts and views. You can use this feature provided by TermStar NXT to view your dictionary as you wish. We hope you find this feature useful. Do try it out!
