Customising the system environment for Transit NXT
One of the strengths of Transit is its flexibility. There are literally thousands of ways to customise Transit NXT to suit your type of work, your personal preferences or your system environment. In this tooltip, we will show you how you can change the settings in one of Transit's initialisation files (.ini) to use other than the default folders for projects, dictionaries and so on. To do so enables you, for example, to share common resources on a file server among several local Transit installations. In this way, local Transit installations can access centrally stored projects, translation memories, dictionaries, as well as global settings and user or customer profiles.
To share common resources with local Transit installations, you have to modify the folder parameters in the file starte.ini. The file is located in the \bin folder of your Transit/TermStar NXT installation.
Common access to settings and folders in a network
In the starte.ini file, you can specify the paths to common resources on a network. The following table shows the paths that are set as default in the starte.ini file.
[PATH] | Used for |
---|---|
CONFIG\GLOBAL=...\Transit NXT\config\sys | System files like file format definitions, mapping tables, etc. |
CONFIG\SYS=...\Transit NXT\config\global | Configuration files like project definitions, templates, report options, etc. with the scope Global |
CONFIG\USERS=...\Transit NXT\config\users | Configuration files like project definitions, templates, report options, etc. with the scope User |
CONFIG\CUSTOMERS=...\Transit NXT\config\customers | Configuration files like project definitions, templates, report options, etc. with the scope Customer |
DB=...\Transit NXT\db | Root folder for TermStar databases |
PROJECTS=...\Transit NXT\projects | Root folder for Transit NXT working folders and subfolders |
SPELL=...\Transit NXT\spell | Spellcheckers |
HELP=...\Transit NXT\help | Help files |
LOG=...\Transit NXT\log | Log files |
How to change the default paths
Depending on your operating system, it is possible to enter changes directly into the starte.ini file with a text editor. Nevertheless, it is advisable that you use the Transit NXT program maintenance wizard to change the paths in the starte.ini file. Proceed as follows (Example: Windows 7):
- From the Windows Start menu, select Start | Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.
- Select Transit NXT from the list, and click on Change above the list.
- In the Transit NXT program maintenance wizard, select the Transit NXT Configuration option.
- In the Transit NXT Configuration window, select Edit the starte.ini file.
- In the following window, replace the specified paths with the paths that contain the data you want to share.
- Confirm to have the installation routine carry out the desired changes.
Example: If you want all your Transit working folders and subfolders to reside in Z:\work\, you have to change PROJECTS=...\Transit NXT\projects to PROJECTS=Z:\work\. Before you carry out changes to the PATH section in the starte.ini file, you have to create the corresponding folders on the shared network drive. Additionally, the data must be transferred from the corresponding local folders to the newly created folders on the shared network drive.
