Proofreading files with Transit NXT

Proofreading files with Transit NXT

The Proofreading mode is very useful for you as a reviewer or a project manager to review a translated file. Working in the Proofreading mode allows you to review specific segments of a file in which segments have been assigned different statuses. You can of course use the segment filter provided by Transit NXT, but the Proofreading mode automatically takes you to those segments that have to be reviewed instead of you having to filter segments manually. Let's see how to review a translated file in the Proofreading mode.

Go to Review | Proofreading as shown in the screenshot below:

Now click on the On/Off button and select the appropriate status from the drop-down list as shown in the screenshot below:

The advantage of selecting a status here is that the check takes into account all those segments which have a status lower than the status selected here. For example, selecting the Spellcheck status will take into account all segments which have a status lower than it. The following is the order of accuracy of segment statuses in Transit NXT.

  1. Not translated
  2. Aligned
  3. Alignment checked
  4. Check pretranslation
  5. Translation
  6. Spellchecked
  7. Checked 1
  8. Checked 2

The highest segment status is Checked 2 and the lowest one is Not translated. The higher the segment status, the more the accuracy of the translation of that segment. How does the Proofreading mode differ from filtering segments manually? Reviewing in this mode is useful, for example, if the document already contains numerous segments which have been spellchecked as they come from the reference material, while newly translated segments in the document still require spellchecking. Let's go on with how to review files with this mode. The Confirm button confirms the segment and also sets its status to the one selected from the drop-down list while starting the Proofreading mode (refer to the above screenshot). You can also use the keyboard shortcut ALT+INS instead of the Confirm button. If you do not wish to alter the status of the segment, you can use the Next button to go to the next segment to be checked. The Navigate button provides you with options for going to the next or previous segment as shown in the screenshot below:

Move to next or previous segment

If you wish to assign a particular status to a segment being reviewed, select the desired status from the drop-down list of the Segment status button as shown in the screenshot below:

Assign status to a segment

Do the same by using the File status button in case you wish to globally assign a status to all the segments of the open language pair. After you are done with proofreading the file, do not forget to exit the Proofreading mode by clicking on the On/Off button, otherwise you will not be able to start the other checking modes in the Processing tab (for example, markups). I hope you find this feature offered by Transit NXT useful. Do not hesitate to leave your comments or ask for specific tooltips. Special thanks to Karen Ellis for reviewing this post.
